A payment gateway helps pass payment information from a checkout or business application to the processing system. Depending on your setup, a gateway may be included with processing or billed by a separate provider.
Gateway charges can include monthly access, transaction-based fees and optional services. Your statement may combine several services under one label, so the printed name is a starting point rather than a complete description.
Ask which gateway the charge relates to, who bills it, what features it includes and whether any transaction fee is additional to the processor’s fee. Check for a separate invoice before assuming your merchant statement includes every cost.
When comparing offers, retain gateway costs that will continue and add new charges that are outside the quoted processing rate. Avoid counting the same included service twice.
